BambooHR AI in 2026: what it does and how to automate HR and IT requests around it

· Reviewed by Ran Ribenzaft, Co-Founder & CTO

Bamboo AI, BambooHR's embedded AI, is in open beta: reports, payroll checks, scheduling and benefits help. What each plan includes and how to automate IT.
BambooHR's AI is Bamboo AI, embedded agents announced in July 2026 as a private beta and now in open beta for all customers. It builds reports from a prompt, compares payroll runs, drafts shift schedules, explains benefits plans and flags missing employee data. Every plan includes an AI Assistant: Core answers HR data questions, Pro adds policies, handbooks and benefits, and Elite adds benchmarks and forecasting. Plans list at $10, $17 and $25 per employee per month. Bamboo AI does not create accounts, grant app access or manage devices, so IT onboarding and offboarding need a separate tool triggered by BambooHR changes.

What is Bamboo AI?
BambooHR introduced Bamboo AI on July 21, 2026 as "an embedded system of AI agents and intelligence built into the BambooHR platform." The release describes a unified data model, an employee context graph, BambooHR-built agents, and a shared agent platform where customers and partners can build their own agents and connect external tools through APIs, SDKs and MCP. Bamboo AI works within a company's existing security model and keeps an audit record of each action. At launch it was "currently available in private beta to select customers." BambooHR showed it again at BambooHR Connect 2026 in September.
BambooHR's product updates page now says Bamboo AI is in open beta for all customers, with administrators managing it under Account Settings, Ask BambooHR. Several capabilities are marked coming soon, and the page does not map individual capabilities to plans.
What Bamboo AI covers for employees
Most of Bamboo AI today serves HR administrators and payroll owners: reports, payroll checks, schedules, job structure suggestions and data hygiene. The employee-facing parts are:
- The AI Assistant, which answers questions about HR data on every plan, and about company policies, handbooks and benefits on Pro and Elite.
- The Self-Enrollment Guide, which explains benefits plans during enrollment.
- The Employee Benefits Assistant and Pre-Hire Reference Documents Chat, both coming soon.
Actions on behalf of employees are limited. Needs Your Attention surfaces time-off requests and changes for approvers, and the Slack app (below) handles time off. Bamboo AI's announced capabilities do not include an agent that completes employee requests end to end the way it handles payroll reminders for administrators.
How BambooHR AI is priced
BambooHR publishes its prices. The plan cards on its pricing page show:
| Plan | Published price | AI included |
|---|---|---|
| Core | $10 USD per employee per month | AI Assistant for HR data questions; AI categorization of eNPS comments |
| Pro | $17 USD per employee per month | Upgraded AI Assistant that also answers policy, handbook and benefits questions |
| Elite | $25 USD per employee per month | Advanced AI Assistant with benchmark questions, forecasting and strategic insights |
The pricing FAQ on the same page gives slightly different figures for Core ($10.25) and Pro ($17.50). Companies with 25 or fewer employees pay flat monthly rates of $250 (Core), $425 (Pro) or $650 (Elite). Volume discounts apply automatically, nonprofits get an extra 15% off, and payment is monthly by card or ACH or annually upfront. Payroll, Benefits Administration, Time and Attendance and Global Employment are add-ons with unpublished prices, and the payroll, benefits and scheduling AI features need those products. BambooHR does not publish a separate charge for Bamboo AI.
Does BambooHR's AI work in Slack or Microsoft Teams?
Not directly, based on what BambooHR has published. The Bamboo AI announcements do not mention Slack or Teams. BambooHR does publish its own app for Slack, which lets employees look up colleagues, check time-off balances (including for future dates), submit time-off requests and see who is out, and sends managers approval alerts for time off and timesheets. That app is not described as AI. For AI outside BambooHR, the route is the MCP connector, currently in beta for Claude.
Where BambooHR's AI stops
Bamboo AI is an HR and payroll assistant. Nothing in BambooHR's AI announcements creates identity accounts, assigns applications, resets passwords or MFA, manages devices or removes a leaver's access. Those jobs sit with your identity provider, MDM and IT team.
Identity provider connections also have limits worth knowing. Okta's known-issues page for its BambooHR integration (Classic Engine) says Okta cannot create new users in BambooHR, does not support Real-Time Termination Sync, and does not support termination based on the employee's location or time zone detected during import. If immediate deprovisioning matters, design for it rather than assume it.
How BambooHR events can trigger IT onboarding and offboarding
BambooHR's API offers event-based webhooks, which BambooHR calls the recommended way to receive employee changes:
| BambooHR event | When it fires | IT work it should start |
|---|---|---|
| employee.created | A new employee record is created | Create accounts, order the laptop, schedule setup |
| employee.updated (monitored fields) | A monitored field changes, such as department, manager, status or termination date | Adjust groups and apps; start offboarding when status or end date changes |
| employee.deleted | An employee record is deleted | Confirm the account was already deprovisioned |
The detail that matters is monitor fields: employee.updated only fires when one of the fields you choose changes, so include status, termination date, department, job title and manager. Event payloads carry the employee ID and the list of changed fields, and your automation reads the rest through the API.
Account creation is only part of onboarding. A complete process also orders equipment, adds people to the right groups and apps, and assigns HR tasks. Offboarding needs session revocation, cleanup of apps outside SSO, device recovery and ownership transfer. See how to revoke access when an employee leaves and which HRIS automates onboarding and offboarding.
Using Harmony with BambooHR
Harmony is an AI service desk that resolves IT and HR requests in Slack and Microsoft Teams and runs the workflows behind them, with BambooHR as the HR system of record.
What the integration does. The Harmony BambooHR integration syncs employee profiles, job details (title, department, division), manager relationships and department hierarchy, employment status, and start and end dates. A new employee starts IT provisioning, a role or department change updates app access, and a closed record at termination starts offboarding, access removal and equipment collection. Resources are assigned by department, role and location, and custom workflows can use the BambooHR API.
Onboarding. The New Hire Onboarding agent starts 14 days before the start date by default and opens a parent ticket with linked tasks for laptop ordering, workstation setup and identity provider account creation with role-based groups, routes hardware and software approvals, and tells the manager when all tasks are done.
Offboarding. The Employee Offboarding agent detects the upcoming end date in BambooHR, collects assigned assets, and opens IT tasks (account termination, VPN removal, factory reset, asset return, ownership transfer, physical access) and HR tasks (exit interview, final payroll, benefits termination). For urgent cases, Employee Account Termination deactivates accounts across configured identity providers and ends sessions after approval.
Everyday requests. Employees ask in Slack or Teams for an MFA reset, application access, time off or a policy answer, and Harmony verifies identity, routes approval and acts, opening a ticket only when a person is needed. See Harmony for HR and HR help desk automation.
How the two fit together. Keep Bamboo AI for what it does inside BambooHR: reports, payroll checks, schedules and benefits explanations. Harmony adds the IT side and a single front door in Slack and Teams, which BambooHR's AI does not offer today. Customer-reported figures published by Harmony: Fireblocks agents processed 915 application access requests and resolved a third of 4,800+ employee conversations with no ticket. Harmony resolves up to 90% of routine requests.
Pricing and ratings. Each deployment is a custom quote scoped to company size and use, including the Slack and Teams agent, knowledge base generation, core integrations and support, and it is available through AWS Marketplace private offers. Harmony is rated 4.8 on G2 (80 reviews), Gartner Peer Insights (32) and Capterra (19).
Limitations. Unlike BambooHR, Harmony has no published self-serve pricing; G2 reviewers ask for more flexible reporting and dashboard widgets; some integrations need extra setup steps; and Harmony was founded in 2025.

Frequently asked questions
What is Bamboo AI?
BambooHR's embedded AI, announced in July 2026. It includes a report assistant, payroll run comparison, smart payroll reminders, a scheduling assistant, benefits guidance, data hygiene checks and an MCP connector for Claude, and it is in open beta for all customers.
Is BambooHR AI included in every plan?
An AI Assistant is included on Core, Pro and Elite, with more capability on higher plans. Payroll, benefits and scheduling AI features need those add-on products. BambooHR does not publish a separate charge for Bamboo AI.
How much does BambooHR cost?
The pricing page lists $10 (Core), $17 (Pro) and $25 (Elite) per employee per month, with $10.25 and $17.50 for Core and Pro in its FAQ, and flat monthly rates of $250, $425 and $650 for 25 or fewer employees.
Does BambooHR have AI in Slack or Microsoft Teams?
BambooHR's AI announcements do not mention Slack or Teams. BambooHR's own Slack app handles directory lookups and time off, but it is not described as AI.
Can BambooHR provision IT accounts for new hires?
Not on its own. Bamboo AI does not create accounts or assign apps; IT tools listen to BambooHR webhooks or sync from BambooHR to do that work.
How do I automate offboarding from BambooHR?
Subscribe to employee.updated with status and termination date as monitor fields, then disable accounts, end sessions, remove non-SSO access, recover devices and transfer ownership. Harmony's Employee Offboarding agent runs these steps from the BambooHR end date.
