Cherwell Alternatives in 2026: Where to Migrate After End-of-Life

Ivanti, which acquired Cherwell in 2021, announced on October 31, 2023 that Cherwell would reach end-of-life on December 31, 2026. Support has already been winding down version by version: technical support for Cherwell 2023.3 ended in June 2025, and support for 2024.1.3, the final release, ends in June 2026. Ivanti has also stopped processing support renewals for unsupported versions.

Every Cherwell customer now faces the same deadline and the same decision. The deadline is fixed: by year-end, Cherwell will be unsupported software running your incident, request, and change management. The decision is more interesting: take Ivanti's default migration path to Ivanti Neurons for ITSM, or treat a forced migration as a rare opportunity to skip a generation of tooling entirely?

Cherwell: what it was, and what end-of-life means for you

Cherwell earned its customer base for good reasons. Its codeless configuration model (mApps and blueprints) let mid-sized IT teams build sophisticated workflows without an army of developers, and its licensing was famously flexible compared to ServiceNow. Many organizations built years of process maturity on it, spanning incident, problem, change, CMDB, and self-service portals.

Then came the acquisition. Ivanti announced its intent to acquire Cherwell in January 2021 and closed the deal that spring, initially telling customers the platform would be integrated with the Ivanti Neurons platform. By late 2023, the message changed: Cherwell was being sunset outright, with the December 31, 2026 end-of-life date and a staged end of version support leading up to it.

For customers, end-of-life is not an abstract milestone. It means:

  • No more security patches. An unpatched, internet-facing ITSM platform holding employee data, credentials workflows, and change records is a serious liability.
  • No vendor support. When an upgrade breaks or the database corrupts, you are on your own or dependent on third-party support firms.
  • Compliance exposure. Auditors treat unsupported core systems as findings, not footnotes.
  • A shrinking talent and partner pool. Cherwell administrators and integration partners are already moving on.

1. Harmony - the AI-native alternative

We will state our bias up front: Harmony is our platform. But there is a reason we put it first. If Cherwell's end-of-life forces you to re-implement service management anyway, you can either rebuild the same ticket-centric model on a newer platform, or move to a model that did not exist when you bought Cherwell.

Cons: Younger platform than the 20-year-old suites; organizations that primarily need deep on-premises CMDB customization or heavily bespoke ITIL process tooling as their core requirement may prefer a traditional suite, potentially with Harmony layered on top as the employee-facing resolution layer.

2. Ivanti Neurons for ITSM - the default path

Ivanti's official answer for Cherwell customers is migration to Ivanti Neurons for ITSM, and Ivanti actively promotes migration programs and customer stories for exactly this move.

Pros: It is the path of least commercial friction: your vendor relationship, contracts, and account team carry over, and Ivanti has purpose-built migration tooling and partners for Cherwell conversions. Neurons is a competent, ITIL-aligned suite with cloud, on-premises, and hybrid deployment options, plus adjacent Ivanti products for UEM, patch, and asset management.

Cons: Two things deserve honest weighting. First, this is your second forced replatforming under the same vendor; Cherwell customers were originally told the product would live on, so factor roadmap risk into any long-term commitment. Second, security posture. Ivanti's gateway products (Connect Secure and Policy Secure, not the Neurons ITSM product itself) have suffered repeated, actively exploited zero-days: CISA issued Emergency Directive 24-01 in January 2024 ordering federal agencies to mitigate or disconnect affected Ivanti appliances, and a further exploited zero-day (CVE-2025-0282) followed in January 2025. That track record does not automatically indict Neurons for ITSM, but it is a legitimate reason to run a full security evaluation rather than defaulting to the incumbent. 3. ServiceNow

The market leader, and where many large Cherwell shops will at least look.

Pros: The broadest and deepest platform in the industry: ITSM, ITOM, ITAM, HRSD, CSM, and a large partner ecosystem. Strong CMDB and workflow tooling, and heavy ongoing investment in its Now Assist AI portfolio. Cons: Cost and complexity. Licensing is among the most expensive in the category, AI capabilities are typically premium add-ons, and implementations commonly require dedicated admins and system integrators. 4. Freshservice (Freshworks)

Pros: Cloud-native, fast to deploy, and consistently praised for usability. Transparent pricing, a solid ITAM and orchestration story, and Freddy AI features embedded across the product. A strong fit for mid-market teams who want modern ITSM without a heavy admin burden.

Cons: Less depth for complex, highly customized enterprise processes than ServiceNow or a mature Cherwell build. Very custom Cherwell blueprints may not translate one-to-one, and advanced AI capabilities sit in higher tiers.

5. Jira Service Management (Atlassian)

Notably, some longtime Cherwell partners pivoted to Atlassian rather than Ivanti after the end-of-life announcement.

Pros: Excellent value, especially if your organization already runs Jira and Confluence. Tight dev-and-ops alignment, strong change management for software-driven teams, and a huge marketplace. Atlassian Intelligence and the virtual service agent add credible AI assistance.

Cons: ITSM process depth (CMDB, complex request catalogs, enterprise change) is thinner than the dedicated suites, and non-technical departments sometimes find the Jira paradigm developer-centric.

6. ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus

Pros: Very strong price-to-capability ratio, with ITIL processes, asset management, and a broad ManageEngine ecosystem (endpoint, AD, identity) behind it. Offers genuine on-premises deployment, which matters to Cherwell's sizable self-hosted base. Zia AI adds assistive features.

Cons: The interface and admin experience feel dated in places, and the AI story is assistive rather than autonomous. Large, complex enterprises may outgrow it.

7. SysAid

How to choose, and how to plan the migration

Start from outcomes, not feature parity. The biggest mistake Cherwell customers make is trying to replicate every blueprint and mApp in a new tool. Years of accumulated customization include plenty of process debt. Ask what each workflow is for, and whether an AI agent could simply resolve that request class instead of routing it.

Decide your architecture question first. Are you buying another system of record for tickets, or an employee-facing resolution layer, or both? AI-native platforms change this calculus: if 90% of requests never need to become a queued ticket, the depth of your queue-management tooling matters far less.

Weigh vendor risk explicitly. Roadmap stability (you have been burned once), security track record, and financial ownership all belong in the scorecard alongside features.
