**Categories:** ITSM, ITAM

The best ITSM and AI service desk options for companies around 300 employees, with a 3-agent cost scenario, what to skip at this size, and when to buy asset management. Verified October 2026.

At 300 employees you typically have two to four people in IT, 300 to 450 requests a month, a SOC 2 audit on the horizon, and a shared Slack or Teams channel doing the job of a help desk. The right tool at this size is light to run, native in your chat tool, and removes the access, account and laptop requests that make up most of the queue. Our shortlist: Siit or Harmony if you want an AI agent that resolves requests in chat; Freshservice Growth or Jira Service Management Standard if you want a conventional suite with public pricing; ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus or InvGate if budget is the constraint. Skip ServiceNow, Moveworks and Rezolve.ai at this size, and note that Risotto's startup tier stops at 200 employees.

## What matters at 300 employees

- **Time to run, not time to configure.** Nobody on a three-person team owns the ITSM. Avoid tools whose G2 reviews lead with "steep learning curve" unless you have an admin who wants the project.
- **Chat-native intake.** Requests already arrive in Slack or Teams. A tool that makes employees go to a portal will be bypassed.
- **Identity actions.** Password and MFA resets, app access and group changes are most of the volume. An agent that acts in Okta or Entra ID removes them; a bot that files tickets does not.
- **Audit evidence.** SOC 2 asks for access reviews and offboarding proof. You want these produced by the tool, not reconstructed from Slack history.
- **Asset tracking you will actually maintain.** A spreadsheet works until the first audit or the first lost laptop. Prefer a tool where devices sync from Intune or Jamf automatically.

## Shortlist and cost scenario (3 agents, list prices, annual billing, October 2026)

| Tool | Annual cost, 3 agents | AI that acts | Chat native | ITAM | Fit note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Siit Standard / Pro | $1,620 / $3,204 | Pro only | Slack and Teams | From Standard | Simplest per-admin pricing; employees do not affect the bill |
| Harmony | Custom quote | Yes, included | Slack and Teams | Yes | Scoped quote; ask for a 300-employee, 3-year number |
| Freshservice Growth / Pro | $1,764 / $3,564, Copilot +$1,044 | Enterprise only (sessions) | Slack and Teams | 100 asset units | Most complete ITIL at this price; acting AI is out of reach on Growth/Pro |
| Jira Service Management Standard / Premium | $720 / $1,851 | Build your own (Premium) | Slack and Teams | Assets (5K/50K objects) | Best value if you already pay for Jira |
| SysAid Professional | $3,204 | Yes, included | Teams native, Slack integration | 250 assets | Teams-first teams |
| ManageEngine SDP Standard / Professional | Free (up to 5 techs) / $972 | Enterprise only | Teams tab | Pro and up | Cheapest credible suite |
| InvGate Starter | $1,499 flat (5 agents) | Virtual agent on Pro+ | Teams on Pro+ | Separate product | Fixed price, clean UI |
| Zendesk Employee Service Team / Growth | $1,044 / $2,124 | Metered per resolution | Slack and Teams | From Growth | Only if you already run Zendesk |
| Atomicwork Professional | $25,000 | Yes | Slack and Teams | Business tier | Floor is high for 300 people |

Per-agent prices understate the real comparison: an acting agent included in the price (Harmony, Siit Pro, SysAid) is doing work you would otherwise hire a fourth person for.

## The picks

**Siit** is the easiest buy at this size: $45 per admin on Standard gives you Slack and Teams, asset and SaaS tracking and approvals; step up to Pro at $89 when you want the AI agents executing resets and provisioning. Limits: thin reporting and a 29-review track record.

**Harmony** makes sense when you want the agent to resolve rather than route from day one, and when you expect to be 500 or 800 people within two years, because the [asset](https://harmony.io/platform/asset-management), [application](https://harmony.io/platform/application-management) and [HR](https://harmony.io/platform/hr-service-delivery) coverage is already in the product. Pricing is a [scoped quote](https://harmony.io/pricing); the company publishes customer results ([Kith](https://harmony.io/customers/kith): 57% of questions resolved with no ticket; [n8n](https://harmony.io/customers/n8n): one IT person from 250 to around 500 employees), which are customer-reported.

**Freshservice Growth** is the conventional choice: catalog, approvals, SLAs, ITAM, a mature Slack app. Know that the Freddy AI Agent that actually fulfils requests is an Enterprise feature with a session allowance; on Growth you get knowledge answers and ticket creation.

**Jira Service Management Standard** at $20 per agent is hard to beat if engineering already lives in Jira; the price of that value is setup complexity, the most common G2 complaint.

**ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus Standard** is free for up to five technicians and includes AI features across editions; the Teams bot handles ticket operations rather than identity actions, and the setup is the usual complaint.

## What to skip at 300

ServiceNow (quote, implementation-heavy), Moveworks (enterprise overlay that needs an ITSM beneath it), Rezolve.ai (scoped for 2,000+ employees), Risotto (startup tier eligibility under 200 employees; Enterprise tier is custom).

## When to buy ITAM

Buy it with the service desk if you will be audited within 12 months or if laptops are shipped to remote employees. Otherwise defer, but choose a tool where adding it later is a tier change rather than a second product (Siit, Harmony, SysAid and Freshservice include it; InvGate sells it separately). Our [IT asset management software guide](https://harmony.io/insights/best-it-asset-management-software-2026) compares the standalone options.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many IT staff should a 300-person company have?

Common ratios are 1 IT person per 70 to 100 employees in tech companies, so three to four. An acting AI agent is what lets you hold three while headcount grows.

### Do we need ITIL at 300 employees?

You need incident, request, and basic change tracking. Problem and release management can wait. Do not buy a tool for processes you will not run.

### Should a 300-person company pick a Slack or Teams help desk first?

Whichever your employees already use for work chat. Harmony, Siit, Freshservice, JSM and Zendesk cover both; SysAid, ManageEngine and InvGate are Teams-first.

### What should the first IT automation be at 300 employees?

MFA and password resets with identity verification. Highest volume, lowest judgement, and the one employees notice first.

### Can we start with a free ITSM tool?

JSM (3 agents), ManageEngine Standard (5 technicians) and trials from Freshservice, Siit, SysAid, InvGate and Zendesk. The AI-native vendors run pilots rather than free tiers.
